“The GoI has assured that the Naga Flag would be given appropriate respect and position it deserves. The Naga Flag’s unrestrained political usage would be pursued post solution democratically. GoI will not object to the use of Naga flag for cultural purpose and in customary institutions.”

Dimapur, 14 October (TP): In a letter of message issued by the Convenor of the Working Group (NNPGs), Kitovi Zhimomi has spelled out his group’s stance on the issue of Naga flag and Naga Yehzabo (Constitution) by saying “let me be very clear on unresolved matters between WC (Working Group) and GoI.” This message from the NNPG Convenor came after the resumption of the talk with AK Mishra and also after receiving much criticisms from section of Naga public accusing his group of giving up on Naga flag and the constituion.

“On the Naga flag”, he stated, “the GoI has been clearly told there is a historical, cultural and spiritual side to it which is too dear to the Naga people. The GoI has assured that the Naga Flag would be given appropriate respect and position it deserves. The Naga flag’s unrestrained political usage would be pursued post solution democratically.” He reiterated that GoI will not object to the use of Naga flag for cultural purpose and in customary institutions. He made it known to the Naga public by stating “let there be no claim for championship prize on this since the symbolic matter, Naga flag will flutter on cultural events, on significant historical days and on the Naga customary institutions in our land.” It may be recalled Kitovi’s interview given to the Nagaland Post in 2019 where he stated that “when government of India has clearly, time and again, stated that sovereign independence is not possible at this stage and mutual agreement is to conclude the issue through democratic process, now why are they (the NSCN-IM) talking about Flag and Constitution?”

“As for the Naga Constitution” he says, “the precise shape, form and source of authority will come from the Naga tribes. Each Naga tribe has convention that governs the conduct of individuals and villages as miniature republics.” In continuation of the letter, he also stressed on Naga integration where he stated that it is a legitimate rightand aspiration of all Nagas that Nagas shall pursue it democratically during post solution.

Further more, he emphasized that the Naga political issue is not a commercial enterprise under the monopoly of Kitovi, Muivah, Rio, Patton or TR Zeliang, and it can never be. He also confessed that once sworn enemies but they have come together under NNPG because God opened up their hearts to reason together, and the leaders of NNPGs from different groups are no nonsense patriots.
