Phangnon Konyak – Nagaland BJP’s Candidate for Rajya Sabha Election
Kohima, March 18 (This Politics): The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has specifically chosen women in multiple states of India to be candidates for the upcoming bienniel Rajya Sabha election 2022. In a letter issued by Arun Singh, BJP National General Secretary, it is stated that S Phangnon Konyak will be the candidate for the upcoming Rajya Sabha election.
Phangnon Konyak is currently working as the Nagaland State President of BJP Mahila Morcha (Women Wing). She will contest in BJP’s ticket for a lone Rajya Sabha seat which is occupied by K.G. Kenye of the Naga People’s Front (NPF) party. He was elected to the Rajya Sabha for Nagaland seat after the incumbent, Khekiho Zhimomi died on 26 November 2015. As Khekiho Zhimomi was retiring on 2 April 2016, fresh election for a fresh term was held, and KG Kenye was elected unopposed on 14 March 2016.
It may me recalled that late Mrs. Rano Shaiza was elected to Lok Sabha as the first woman MP from Nagaland in 1977 from the United Democratic Front party. If Phangnon Konyak gets elected this time, she will be the second woman MP from Nagaland after a gap of more than four decades since 1977.
