Two Manipuris in London Declare Manipur’s Independence
Imphal, Oct. 30: Two native Manipuris – Yamben Biren & Narengbam Samarjit- held a press conference with a title “Announcement of Declaration of Independence of Manipur from India” on October 29, 2019 in London.
According to them, they are forming Manipur State Council ‘a government in exile’ as a representatives of Manipur King Leishemba Sanajaoba.
In the press conference, they said , “we believe that now is the right time to make public the independent government of Manipur before the international community and seek recognition….we call on all the governments of the sovereign states of the members of the United Nations for their recognition of the de jure and exile government of Manipur from today onwards.”
They further added that their “attempts to engage with the Indian government were met with hate and hostilities”. They claimed there are “more than 1,528 cases of extrajudicial killings” pending in Supreme Court.
On the other hand, titular King Leishemba Sanajaoba has utterly denounced the duo’s claims. He said that they came to him for signature “on the pretext of acquiring some Manipur-related documents & pictures from London. He is unaware of the declaration”, said Angellica Aribam, a Manipuri activist.
As a response to this, the state Chief Minister of Manipur has pronounced to let this matter be investigated by the NIA. Moreover, he has declared them “enemy of the state.”
Shockinly, Samarjit Singh is also known as the founder of the political party North East India Development Party (NEIDP) whose candidate in Manipur recently contested for the Lok Sabha MP seat; but unsuccessful.
